MRC Integrative-Toxicology Training Partnership (ITTP) PhD Studentships - 22 October 2010

Three ITTP studentships are available to start October 2011.  The studentships will be awarded to supervisors on a collaborative basis in a ‘sandpit’ event to be held at the MRC Toxicology Unit, University of Leicester on the 13th December 2010. The studentships will be of 4 years duration and will include taught courses in a wide range of aspects of toxicology as well as pertinent advances in molecular sciences.

Academics and representatives of industrial companies and government agencies who wish to take part in the ‘sandpit event’ are invited to apply as soon as possible.  Places will be limited and selection of attendees for the day will include a ‘first come first served’ basis.  Those wishing to attend should have an outline of a project in mind but no formal project application will be required.  Successful attendees will be awarded studentships by consensus at the end of the ‘sandpit’ day.

The emphasis of the ITTP is on aligning modern cell, molecular and systems biology based approaches with other fundamental and health-related disciplines to provide an integrative, holistic approach relevant to translational toxicology research and training.

Applications to be an attendee should be sent to Dr Andy Smith via ags5@le.ac.uk by 15th November 2010. Expenses will be available for those selected to attend.

Are animal models predictive for humans? - 06 November 2009

Three leading US antivivisectionists, Niall Shanks, Ray Greek and Jean Greek, had a review paper published in the open access journal Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanties in Medicine titled "Are animal models predictive for humans?"

In it they "empirically analyse animal models using scientific tools" and claim that they fall far short of being able to predict human responses. The review is a platform for attacking the use of animals in toxicity testing. Professor Dario Ringach of UCLA is aiming to recruit toxicologists to respond in detail and to provide a thorough resource for future reference, since toxicology is an area where detailed material refuting antivivisection claims is thin on the ground.

If you are interested in helping, please contact Barbara Davies at bdavies@uar.org.uk before the end of November.
