Dr John Thompson

John Thompson is Director of the National Poisons Information Service (Cardiff), Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology at Cardiff University and Honorary Consultant at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. Having qualified from Sheffield University with degrees in Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, Medicine and Surgery, John undertook his clinical training in Sheffield, Oxford, Salisbury and Southampton before moving to Cardiff.

He has a longstanding interest in education. Within Cardiff University he was the first course organiser for the postgraduate distance-learning courses in Medical Toxicology and subsequently Associate Course Director for courses in Therapeutics, and in Occupational Health Policy and Practice too. He is the lead for Clinical Pharmacology and Prescribing and Therapeutics for the undergraduate medical Course at Cardiff.

John was chair of the Human Toxicology Specialty interest section of the BTS for over ten years, helping to organise many sessions at the annual Congresses including Food Allergy and Intolerance, Epigenetics, Herbal Medicines, Drug Abuse in Sport and Novel Psychoactive Substances.

Nationally, John is a member of the Committee on Toxicity and has previously served two terms on the Veterinary Products Committee (2000 – 2008), chairing the Suspected Adverse Reactions Scheme for Veterinary Medicines. He is a member of the New Medicines group for the All Wales Therapeutic and Toxicology Centre.
