President’s Newsletter Number 2: June 2022
This is my second Newsletter message as President of the BTS. I should like to draw your attention to the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to be held online via Zoom from 15.00 to 16.30 hours on Wednesday 29th June 2022. BTS members will have received an e-mail from the BTS Secretariat on Tuesday 31st May 2022. This e-mail contained a link for BTS members to join the online EGM on 29th June and copies of both the Draft Examined Accounts and the Proposal to Increase BTS Membership Fees from January 2023.
The purpose of the EGM is to consider the Draft Examined Accounts and the proposal to increase BTS membership fees. The proposal to increase membership fees was raised at the BTS Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Monday 4th April 2022 in Newcastle. However, as the draft BTS accounts were not available at that time, this matter could not be considered at the AGM in April and hence an EGM has now been scheduled. The Executive Committee and myself hope you will participate in the EGM on 29th June 2022.
With respect to fees, BTS members will note that we are proposing raising fees for all membership categories (i.e. full, early career, retired and PhD student) and to eliminate the higher fee associated with non-direct debit membership as shown the table below. BTS membership fees were last raised in January 2019 and hence this will be the first increase for four calendar years. The requirement to increase BTS member fees is detailed in the proposal. Overall, we need to increase BTS income from member fees in order to continue to deliver services to BTS members.
Membership Category Existing Proposed
Full £94.00 £112
Early career £42.00 £50
Retired £37.50 £45
PhD student £21.00 £25
On another matter, I am pleased to inform you that we have now finalised the venue and dates for the 2023 BTS Annual Congress. The meeting will be held in the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham and the dates of the meeting have now been changed to Monday 17th to Wednesday 19th April 2023. Please note these revised dates. Further details of the BTS 2023 Annual Congress will be provided soon and at a later date I will provide you with an update of our strategic priorities for 2022/23.
Finally, the BTS Committees are here to serve the membership and we are always open to receiving your suggestions for any changes that can be made including topics for scientific meetings.
