Timothy Clive Marrs OBE MD DSc FRCP FRCPath FBTS (1945-2025)
Dear Colleagues
Timothy Clive Marrs OBE MD DSc FRCP FRCPath FBTS (1945-2025)
The Society has received the sad news that Dr Tim Marrs, a Fellow of the British Toxicology Society, died at home on 1st November 2025. Tim was a long-term member of the BTS and a member of its Scientific Subcommittee during the 1980s. Many members of the BTS will remember him for his convivial personality at BTS meetings. Our thoughts are with his family and all those who knew Tim.
Tim was born in Edenbridge, Kent and attended Tonbridge School (1958-1963) before qualifying in Medicine at Westminster Hospital Medical School, London (MB BS) in 1968. After house appointments, he trained in pathology at Westminster Hospital Medical School, London (1970-1975), following which he was appointed as a consultant chemical pathologist at St. Stephen’s Hospital, London (1975-1980). In 1980, he became Medical Officer (Research) at the Chemical Defence Establishment (Porton Down) and later Head of the Section of Pathology and Clinical Toxicology. In 1990, he moved to the Department of Health as Senior Medical Officer in charge of the Pesticides and Veterinary Drugs section. On the creation of the Food Standards Agency in 2000, Tim was appointed as its Chief Toxicologist. He was awarded the OBE in 2004. He retired from the Agency in 2005 and, for the next 20 years, he ran Edentox Associates, a toxicological consultancy company. He also held part-time appointments at the University of Central Lancashire (Visiting Professor) and was Consulting Clinical Toxicologist at the National Poisons Information Service (Birmingham Unit).
Academically, he received an MSc Lond in 1973, an MD Lond in 1977 and a DSc Lond in 1994. He achieved MRCPath in 1975 and FRCPath in 1987. Exceptionally, he was awarded MRCP Lond without examination and advanced to the Fellowship in 1998.
Tim co-authored/co-edited Chemical Warfare Agents: Toxicology and Treatment (1996), General and Applied Toxicology (1999), Organophosphates and Health (2001), Pesticide Toxicology and International Regulation (2004), Mammalian Toxicology of Insecticides (2012), Regulatory Toxicology in the European Union (2018) and Neurotransmitters and Toxicology (2024). His final publications will be the introductory chapters (with Kevin Woodward) in the Clinical Toxicology of Pesticides (2026). Tim published more than 100 papers, particularly on pesticide toxicity, and drafted several monographs for the Joint FAO/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues and for the International Programme on Chemical Safety.
Tim’s knowledge of general toxicology was extensive; his knowledge of the toxicology of pesticides and especially of organophosphorus compounds was unrivalled. In addition to his professional expertise and enthusiasm, he was a deeply learned man with a fine knowledge of classical music, literature, and history.
Our thanks go to Professors Allister Vale and Robert Maynard CBE who wrote this Obituary in memory of Dr Marrs OBE.
Yours
Phil and Shirley
