Professor Shirley Price

General Secretary

Professor Price is Emerita Professor of Toxicology at the University of Surrey having held several senior posts at the University and was a member of the University Council. She also holds a Visiting Professorship at the University of Hertfordshire and an Honorary Professorship in Toxicology at the UKHSA. She remains active in education and training and currently chairs the Steering Committee and Advisory Board for the BTS Skills Gap Initiative.

Professor Price has over 35 years’ experience in toxicology specialising in mechanisms of toxicity, risk assessment of chemicals, combined effects of chemical mixtures at low exposure level and the effects of non-genotoxic carcinogens. She remains research active working with the University of Hertfordshire, St Georges Medical School and the UKHSA.

Professor Price is an Honorary Fellow of the British Toxicology Society and Fellow of  the Royal Society of Biology, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Higher Education Academy. She is a trustee of the British Toxicology Society and has served as the President from 2020-2022. She  currently holds the post of the BTS General Secretary. She  is a member of a number of committees within the Royal Societies of Biology (RSB) and Chemistry (RSC). Recently she was appointed as a member of the  RSC Engagement Group on the Science-Policy Panel for Chemicals, Waste and Pollution Prevention. She is also a trustee on the Carbon Monoxide Research Trust  (CORT).

Professor Price  has worked on a number of government committees including the World Health Organisation’s Reproductive Unit, Veterinary Residues Committee and the Paediatrics Expert Advisory Committee. She was appointed as a Commissioner for the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) from 2014-2023. She is  currently a member of a number of Expert Working Groups and Advisory Groups within CHM. She is the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Group on Chemical Safety of Non-Food and Non-Medicinal Consumer Products (SAG-CS), Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). Professor Price is a member of the Food Standards Agency’s  Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) and a member of the Joint Expert Group on Additives, Enzymes and other Regulated Products (AEJEG) and the PFAS Working Group which she Chairs.

Professor Price is on the Register of Experts for the  Joint European Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and in 2023 was appointed as a Temporary Adviser for the WHO/FAO Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives on the safety of Titanium Dioxide
